Stop or play on for the gold case?

You know the drill: business is very busy and you desperately need that new colleague. You engage an agency for recruitment and selection, which comes up with the redeeming message that they have a suitable candidate for you. The interview goes well and the applicant is also enthusiastic, great!

Still, you are not 100% convinced. Moreover, there is no comparison material… Now what?

Awkward position

Unfortunately, in this tight labor market, a luxury of multiple candidates is not a given. This can put you as an employer in an awkward position during the recruitment process.

What do you do with that one motivated candidate you have a good feeling about, but who does not meet all the requirements from the ideal job profile?

Your options

The first option is to put this candidate “on hold. A safe option, but also of a temporary nature. Especially in this market, you must follow up quickly, or the bird has often already flown.

A more rigorous move is to reject the applicant despite the positive interview. With the hope that another will remove the doubt, or perhaps even the familiar sheep with five legs will walk by. This all-or-nothing approach is a risk that often ends up empty-handed.

Sounds like Million Hunt...

We see no unfamiliar interaction here. After all, everyone knows Miljoenenjacht. Halfway through the game, a player receives an offer of €150,000. Attractive, but presumably there is more in the pot. There are still high and low amounts among the remaining suitcases. Curiosity takes over and the game continues. Sometimes the player gets lucky and takes home €250,000, but regularly they also get to go home with a “poodle prize” of €50,000.

In the world of recruitment, there is no consolation prize, so the position remains unfilled. Had you gone straight for that motivated candidate, it would have saved time AND money. And the workload problem would already have been solved.

How do you stand in this?

Are you satisfied with a great opportunity and make that applicant an immediate offer? Or do you play on for the gold case, at the risk of missing out on a new colleague?
