You don't apply for a job every day!

Do you recognize that feeling? You have a great employer and are in a good place. Yet every now and then it itches. Sometimes you see a job opening that makes you think, interesting! But you hesitate to click the application button…

Doubt strikes

Suddenly all sorts of questions shoot through your mind and doubt strikes. Do I really want to leave here, I’m fine, right? Would the job really be as interesting as I think? ‘Tis such a hassle an application process…. Never mind.

On the other hand, you don’t want to pass up a golden opportunity either. That makes it worthwhile to find out where your doubt comes from. After all, then you also know how to eliminate it. Usually it revolves around one of these situations:

Three situations

1. I don’t have enough information to apply

What can you do? Googling is of course the well-known answer when you have questions. But also see if someone close to you knows the company and can provide a reference. Or get in touch with the contact person for the position and ask your questions directly. The more information you gather, the better you can weigh up whether applying is worthwhile….

2. I’m fine, right?

Perhaps you are not consciously looking for a new position because you are just fine in your spot. Still, there is a reason why the job posting caught your attention. Are you running on autopilot too much right now? What’s interesting about this new position? Is it a nice-to-have or is it too important not to take action on? Do you have the same opportunity with your current employer?

3. It’s such a hassle

Taking a new step is always exciting. It throws all sorts of things off track and for a while nothing is certain anymore. But applying for a job is only the first step. You express your interest. You’re not locked into a contract just yet. During the application process, you get more and more information and impressions of your possible new employer and new position. And at any time you can still decide whether to say yes or no. And even if the conclusion is that it is not your new position, you will always become wiser!

'Tis such a hassle an application process. Never mind. Or.....?

Tying the knot!

When it is clear where the doubt is coming from, the point that you really do want to apply for a job may be closer. If so, I have a few more tips for you:

  • Make sure your resume is clear and organized. Maybe it has been a while so make an update with a business photo attached.
  • A good agency is also curious about your motivation. What makes this position attractive to you? What added value can you provide with your background? The resume is a guide, but your motivation shows your personality!
  • Think about what you want to accomplish. What opportunities do you see for yourself in this new position? If your personal ambition matches the ambition of the organization, then you really strengthen each other and there is the well-known win-win!
