The ROI story of Charlotte van Rumst
Charlotte van Rumst started a year and a half ago as Product Manager at Orinso, dealer in organic residual waste. An industry and position in which she had no experience whatsoever. Finding a new challenge was quite difficult. This is her ROI story, telling what the past year has brought her personally.
What were your expectations beforehand?
I actually had no expectations at all. After years of working in the B2B furniture industry, I wanted to work in a different industry. Before that, I contacted several recruiting firms, but their response was the same every time. Either my salary was too high or I had too little experience in the industry. That pigeonholing didn’t get me much further.
The interview with Erwin, a consultant at Velde, went differently. He looked more at my personality than at my resume. He also said honestly that it was not going to be easy. Still, he drew my attention to the Product Manager vacancy at Orinso. The position and the industry were so unfamiliar to me that it was exactly the challenge I was looking for. In terms of background, I was really the white raven in the recruitment process. But my drive and enthusiasm were the deciding factors.
What is the reality like?
In practice, I like it very much. I thought very quickly; I should have done this a long time ago. A whole new, different world. And Orinso is a very warm company. The two of us started at the same time. That was very special, because that my new colleague was an acquaintance from before. Together we started training in the Netherlands. And after that I spent the first six months mainly gaining all the substantive knowledge. In my job you end up in all kinds of companies: food companies, agricultural companies, cement plants, oil refineries. That makes it very interesting. And sometimes it’s even beneficial that the job and industry are unfamiliar to me, because I come in with a different perspective and look at things differently. That in turn benefits Orinso.

What is your Return on Investment?
Obviously, it’s been a successful transition for you. What has the past year brought you? Above all, a lot more meaning, I am useful. The weeks fly by, there is no longer a rut. My job satisfaction is really back.
Beforehand, in terms of ambition, you indicated that you like to be useful and really want to contribute. Did Orinso’s ambition to reduce waste play a role in that? I’m not working on that on a daily basis, but subconsciously it certainly plays a role. I also really like to explain what my job is. Many people have no idea what it takes to process all our waste. You don’t think about that if you don’t work in the industry.
What do you still want to get done as you look to next year? Getting an even better grip on the current market. We are in fact working on three areas: the purchase of residual streams, transport and the biogas plants. I still have my hands full with that.
